7 Secrets to Musical Success and Financial Success in Music

Let’s be honest! It’s not easy to make a living as a musician. Music is one of those things that large amounts of people believe that they do well and because of that, there are amateurs who are competing against professionals for the available music jobs.

Here’s the good news: The reason that so many musicians aren’t making a sustainable living is because they aren’t aware of the many opportunities available for a musician. Let’s look at a few:

Recording: Do you have a talent for using recording technology? The equipment to record is cheap for the amateur but very few can really do it well. Hone your skills, take some workshops, and build some experience and this could be a great living.

Critic: Newspapers, blogs, and other media outlets are looking for critics to go to concerts and write reviews of the newest musical acts. If you have a love of music along with exceptional writing skills, this could be a job for you.

Repair: If you’re good with your hands, musical instrument repair technicians are always needed and this job transcends all music. Guitars, keyboards, amps, trumpets, and drums all break and for the hundreds of thousands of small children who play instruments and take music lessons but haven’t learned to properly take care of them, repair technicians always have work.

Performer: This is a challenging career path because it’s an area where the amateurs are competing against the professionals. This also serves to drive down the price that a professional musician can make. Most recommend having these skills and doing it alongside of something with a more sustainable income source.

Publisher: With the amount of music being written thanks to easy to use software, publishers are busier than ever before. Publishers need sales professionals, executives, and other business minded people who can keep the low margin publishing houses maximizing profits. And online publishing is a huge and growing field as well, offering blogs such as Piano Chords & Chord Progressions which offers piano lessons online.

Copyists/orchestrators: Are you in the vicinity of studios that produce television and movie productions? Often, this music needs copyists and orchestrators to rapidly prepare music for studio musicians to perform and record. Because this often happens in a matter of hours, you have to be able to work on sort deadlines and in a high stress environment but most report that the job is exhilarating.

Education: If you enjoy working with young people, probably the most consistent and sustainable living is to be a public school music educator. While the number of jobs in this field fluctuate, as most know, government jobs are some of the most stable and a public school pays a good wage while also offering great benefits. Private teachers too often make a good living giving piano lessons and other types of musical instruction.

Legal Free Music Downloads – Songs You Want at No Cost

It’s all over the news these days. Download music from the Internet and you could be sued, fined, and/or go to jail. The truth is free music downloads, done correctly, are completely legal.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) aggressively prosecutes copyright violators. And well they should – it’s piracy plain and simple. But there are millions of free mp3 downloads legally available. RIAA doesn’t want you to know this and wants you to believe any music downloads you don’t pay for are illegal.

You’ll quickly attract RIAA’s attention by using file-sharing services like Kazaa and Grokster. The technology is not illegal (yet), but using it to share downloadable music is at best a grey area. And make no mistake, RIAA can and will find you!

How do I get Free Downloadable Music without breaking the law?

First understand the difference between restricted and unrestricted copyrights. Nearly all songs have an artist or record label copyright. Many copyrights restrict gratis downloads. But many musicians want to share their music at no charge through free downloads.

Why, you might ask? Some are unknowns looking for exposure, but many famous musicians know it’s in their interest to offer free downloads. It inevitably leads to more CD, concert and merchandise sales. Plus it boosts their image and popularity.

Most music download services offer a free trial period when you can download songs at no cost. Cancel before the trial ends and the songs cost nothing. Of course they hope you’ll stay and pay the monthly membership fee, which in reality is a cheap way to expand your music collection.

Study the membership terms as some sites only allow use of the downloads while you are a member. In addition, a “free music” search will lead to sites – by or for musicians – that offer mp3 downloads for free.

Do The Black Keys and Vinyl Records Signal the Renaissance of the Golden Age of Rock and Roll Music?

The fact that the Black Keys won three Grammys makes me so happy, because I love them to death. I really love the fact that they aren’t really young, teenyboppers; they are true musicians complete with sexy beards and tired sunken eyes.

I listen to a lot of old classic rock and blues and when I listen to The Black Keys I get the distinct feeling that a renaissance has occurred while we weren’t looking. I have spent my whole life angry at the way music has been ruined, ‘rock and roll is dead man!’, but The Black Keys give me some sort of hope. A couple of days after they won those Grammy’s I was reading an article in the paper about young people starting to buy vinyl records again, and my first response was a sarcastic yeah that hasn’t been going on for like years now or anything, good job catching that bit of breaking news.

But then I started thinking about why it was happening, and then the popularity of The Black keys and bands like them, which use old style riffs and classic blues elements, came into my mind, and I thought that surely all this nostalgia tells us something about the age we are living in. This is a moment in history where some people have finally realized that most of the things being produced are purely moneymaking exercises developed with formulas that are known to result in mass popularity. I have thought this my entire life, I have always lived with a sense of nostalgic desire for the golden age of rock and roll and the times before mass production and excessive consuming. THEN in the past couple of years the whole ‘hipster/indie’ thing happened and those views (which used to just be me thinking whatever I wanted to think) suddenly didn’t sound so crazy. The point is that liking and thinking alternative things suddenly stopped being weird and started being cool.

I have always wanted to start a movement in the music industry, which brought back classic rock, the golden age, unfortunately due to my lack of musical ability this hasn’t happened. But just looking at these Black keys posters alone, I think they may have already started the renaissance without me.

I still feel that maybe we are heading to a new age when we stop buying from the corporate giants and we stop listening to mass marketed, super produced boy bands and start looking for artistry and integrity. And although I know that One Direction is still the most popular thing on the planet and not everyone will change, I still think at least a far greater majority of us will and maybe that can lead to amazing developments in the world away from the evil corporate giants that have been controlling us since the 1980’s.

Now the problem with this, many people say, is that it makes it harder for people to be individual when the people that follow trends start coming into the indie trend and that they are ruining it for the real people. I think this is such crap, just do what you want to do and be whoever, we have far to much of a preoccupation with be ‘individual’ in our society that it has become an actual TREND. The funny part of it is that the fact that even indies cant be individual should be telling us that WE AREN’T INDIVIDUALS we are part of a world, a universe and a global community and we need to stop being angry at others for stealing our ‘individualness’ (not a word but whatever) and just fucking be.
